This is a hard one. I mean its not like there is actually a lot of material to discuss here.
Mineral was a rock band that started in Houston, TX in 1994. Shorty thereafter the band relocated to Austin. They released two albums through Crank! A record comapny (Thats the full name of the label, not just me explaining what they do) and disbanded before even being able to properly tour on their final release.
Mineral was without a doubt one of the most underrated bands of the 1990's, often credited with helping to shape and define the sound that come to be known as "emo". They had the classic touring rock band mentality of "Fucking get up and go and get shit done". Mineral toured the United states extensively in a very short period of time. This is the type of band you can look at and sincerely tell that they showed up every night at small clubs to play to 20 to 30 kids...and they couldnt have been happier about it.
Minerals music contained a heartfelt honesty beyond even the obviously self influenced lyrical stylings of bandleader Chris Simpson. You can hear the longing in his voice and you can feel the passion in the pounding drums and raw guitars of the band.

There really arent that many good live videos out there when it comes to Mineral stuff...they are all VHS transfers (which really, is kind of sweet) but most of them are poorly mixed or completely blown out.
The one video I do have for you is pretty spectacular though. Its from Mind Over Matter fest which was held in Wayne County just outside of Detroit in my home state of Michigan on March 7-9th in the amazing year that was 1997. So enjoy this one guys, it really showcases Mineral at the top of their game.
NOTE: REALLY CHECK OUT HOW HARD THIS GUY POUNDS THOSE DRUMS.

ReplyDeleteWow, dude! These guys are great! Where in Wayne County does Mind Over Matter Fest take place? Do they still do the Fest? It's sad that I was plenty old enough to go to this show, and it was probably right down the street, but I had no idea it was even happening. Thanks for bringing this to the masses.
ReplyDeleteNo problem man! mineral is honestly one of my favorite bands ever. I hope more and more people start to read this blog and become aware of all the hidden gems we are going to collect here.
